Overcome this common roadblock

DENIAL

Well the answer as to how denial contributes to weight gain, and failure to lose weight may be obvious to some, there are actually several ways in which denial can have an insipid effect on weight loss attempts. For one, denial keeps us unwilling to ask for help. Clearly, if we knew exactly how to fix our weight loss problem, we would. Let’s be honest here…we don’t know everything, and in order to achieve our weight loss goals, we are going to have to accept help. Secondly, denial keeps us from being accountable. If we lie to the trainer, nutritionist, or therapist about what is really going on, we evade accountability. Being accountable is a HUGE component of weight loss. When we don’t allow ourselves to be responsible to another person, which is what accountability is, we are going to have trouble being responsible for ourselves. This brings us to the third way in which denial inhibits weight loss. When we lack responsibility for our own behavior, and deny what we are doing, we will find causes for our behavior outside of ourselves. Essentially, we will blame other people for our failure to lose weight. When did blaming others ever make anything better? If we can’t take responsibility for our own behavior, we can’t lose weight, plain and simple. Lastly, denial removes us from ourselves. If we are denying things in our lives, we are not paying attention to what we really need in life. Surely we have all had the experience of denying that something was bothering us only to become furious about it later. We ignored our anger, and instead of attending to our need to express our anger, it ended up coming out like a volcano. Anger like this, or any emotion poorly managed does not lead to healthy choices that support weight loss. So stop denying things and get honest, your weight loss depends on it!
